The East Oakland Boxing Association/Smartmoves is recruiting youth 13 to 20 years of age to become a scholar warrior through the A.W.A.K.E (Aspiring Warrior Acquiring Knowledge to Empower) apprenticeship program. Participants will learn many martial art styles (boxing, jui jitsu, kung fu, mma, fighting arts) in exchange for community service, youth leadership training and academic support. 2010 Filipino Conference to be Held at Sonoma State
The Center for Babaylan Studies will host the 1st International Babaylan Conference in April 2010 at Sonoma State University in Northern California. Grace Nono, Katrin de Guia, Virgil Apostol and others will present aspects of the Filipino indigenous culture seldom taught outside the Philippines. The conference will gather to honor those who continue to carry the rich legacy of Filipino indigenous knowledge and practices. The Babaylan in Filipino culture represents the figure of the indigenous healer. This sacred gathering of healers, artists, scholars, activists, performers, and other culture-bearers will share Babaylan-inspired work through ritual, ceremony, dance, poetry, film, academic panels, conversations, and workshops.
