The East Oakland Boxing Association/Smartmoves is recruiting youth 13 to 20 years of age to become a scholar warrior through the A.W.A.K.E (Aspiring Warrior Acquiring Knowledge to Empower) apprenticeship program. 2010 Filipino Conference to be Held at Sonoma State

The Center for Babaylan Studies will host the 1st International Babaylan Conference in April 2010 at Sonoma State University in Northern California. Grace Nono, Katrin de Guia, Virgil Apostol and others will present aspects of the Filipino indigenous culture seldom taught outside the Philippines. The conference will gather to honor those who continue to carry the rich legacy of Filipino indigenous knowledge and practices. The Babaylan in Filipino culture represents the figure of the indigenous healer. This sacred gathering of healers, artists, scholars, activists, performers, and other culture-bearers will share Babaylan-inspired work through ritual, ceremony, dance, poetry, film, academic panels, conversations, and workshops. Growing Up Filipino II: More Stories for Young Adults is the second volume of the Growing Up Filipino series by PALH. In this collection of 27 short stories, Filipino and Filipino American writers explore the universal challenges and experiences of Filipino teens after the historic events of 9/11. The modern demands do not hinder Filipino youth from dealing with the universal concerns of growing up: family, friends, love, home, budding sexuality, leaving home. The delightful stories are written by well known as well as emerging writers. While the target audience of this fine anthology is young adults, the stories can be enjoyed by adult readers as well. There is a scarcity of Filipino American literature and this book is a welcome addition.

SAN FRANCISCO - A coalition of community leaders and organizations in the San Francisco Bay Area have teamed up to help raise awareness and funds on behalf of more than 700,000 people displaced as a result of the floods that inundated 80 percent of Metro Manila in the Philippines last week. Typhoon Ketsana (known in the Philippines as Ondoy) claimed the lives of hundreds of Filipinos in the worst such calamity in the region's history.

Asian Art Museum Hosts 1st Annual Filipino-American National History Month Celebration

September 15, 2009, San Francisco, CA: October is FilipinoAmerican National History Month, and the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco will mark this important period by honoring the narratives and contributions of Filipinos in the United St ates with a museumwide celebration on Sunday, October 4 from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Museum visitors can explore Philippine art and Filipino American history in the Bay Area through an array of presentations and act ivit ies by local Filipino American artists, performers, writers, scholars, educators, and community groups, including a panel discussion on Filipino American histories in the Bay Area, literary readings, videos, and displays from personal collections of historical artifacts.

Visitors can also enjoy an original theatrical work from local Filipino American performing arts organizat ion group Bindlest iff, as well as Pinoy Jazz, Blues, and Kundiman by musical group Little Brown Brother led by Carlos Zialcita, director of the San Francisco Filipino American Jazz Festival.

The museum also invites visitors to explore artworks from the Philippines on view in the museum’s Southeast Asian galleries, which highlights items from the museum’s collect ion. Families can also enjoy art activities inspired by Philippine culture, including listening to Filipino folktales presented in the museum’s galleries, and watching performances of classical Philippine dances presented by youth from the American Center for Philippine Art.

Hours: The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, with extended hours until 9:00 pm every Thursday from February through September.

General Admission: $12 for adults, $8 for seniors, $7 for youth 13–17, and free for children under 12. On Thursday evenings (February through September) general admission after 5 pm is just $5 for all visitors except those under 12 and members, who are always free. Target First Free Sundays: The museum offers FREE general admission to all on the first Sunday of every month, courtesy of Target.
